Join Burnett Avenue as we celebrate Watch Night service on New Year’s Eve! Rooted in African American religious tradition, we will gather to worship, sing, dance, and pray until the stroke of midnight ushers in the new year. Watch Night was established on December 31, 1862, when enslaved and freed African Americans gathered, watched and waited for the news that their freedom had been secured through the Emancipation Proclamation that went into effect January 1, 1863. Continuing this tradition encourages us to reflect on God’s steadfast love through the trials and triumphs of the past year, while anticipating His promises and faithfulness into the new year.
